New super-airport considered for the South East

This week talks have begun in earnest about the possibility of creating a new state of the art airport to increase flight capacity around London and the South East.

London Mayor Boris Johnson and a team of advisors have begun to look at possible locations with a view to significantly boosting volumes of flight traffic without the need to expand the current Heathrow site.

As extending flight capacity is thought to be imperative if London is to continue to attract revenue from foreign investment and tourism, both MPs and business leaders arebacking the talks. Opinions are likely to be divided however on where the new airport should be sited.

The Hoo Peninsula in North Kent

One of the locations being considered isthe Hoo Peninsula in North Kent. This area was also earmarked for airport expansion plans back in 2002 but was ultimately rejected as development in the area was felt to be too costly and controversial.

One of the reasons for the controversy stemmed from the fact that the area contains a large winter nesting ground for wild birds such as marsh harriers. With development plans for Hoo back on the table, it’s likely that a fresh wave of protests will be sparked from both local residents and green campaigners.

The tourism industry’s perspective

While government officials and sector heads mull over the plans, travel agencies, airlines and airport parking operators watch developments with a keen interest. Airport parking specialists in particular stand to benefit from early knowledge of the new airport’s location as they want to be first in the queue to snap upreal estate around the new site.

Bud Mott of airport parking specialists BVP commented, “the prospect of increasing passenger numbers in the South East is an exciting one, especially if it is to be achieved through a brand new world-class airport. I know everyone in the airport parking industry will be eager to hear the outcome of the Mayor’s review.”
