Tui Travel sets new green guidelines for hotels
Leading European package holiday company Tui Travel has this week hosted a one day conference designed to raise the environmental standards of its accommodation suppliers.
At the conference were 40 hoteliers, engineers and sustainability experts, gathered to witness the unveiling of Tui’s new guidelines for environmental sustainability in hotels.
The group is keen to extend the number of hotels within its product offering which carry the Travelife Sustainability accreditation, something which it feels is key to them remaining competitive in the marketplace.
It announced plans to ensure that 50% of its accommodation carries Travelife certification by summer 2011 and 100% by 2015, something which may leave hoteliers with mixed feelings.
Tui Travel’s Sustainable Product Manager Sean Owens takes up the story:
“Travelife accreditation will be a licence to operate in future but there are a great many hotels where the penny has not dropped.”
“The key is ensuring hoteliers recognise the mutual benefits and the fact that there are many low-cost options for making savings. Sometimes hoteliers need to think of the whole picture. If a hotel has heavy bed linen for example, it requires much more air conditioning to cool the bedrooms.”
